My graphic designer, Keenan Turner, asked me a funny question and I had to give it some thought. What would Darth Vader drive if he were on Earth? Hmm, interesting question.
This all started when I wore my “Expressions of Vader” t-shirt to work one day, a day when I obviously didn’t have to see any customers. If you’ve never seen this t-shirt, there are 9 pictures of Darth Vader with captions that read “Angry, Happy, Sad, Sleepy, Confused, Cheerful, Frustrated, Excited and Proud” all displaying the SAME photo of Darth Vader.
So, what WOULD Vader drive if he were on Earth? My answer, the Mercedes AMG 6×6. One amazing vehicle that roams the Earth like no other production vehicle. Don’t get me wrong, the Hummer H1 is a awesome. And the military grade vehicles like the Unimog, Power Wagon, HEMTT,
Chenowth and the Daimler Ferret are all impressive vehicles, but lack the true comfort and luxurious surroundings the AMG 6×6 has.
Granted, this is a limited production vehicle and not everyone will be able to afford it. This hand built vehicle is made of standard G-Class parts and the returned transfer case is made from an Austrian military G.
There are many exciting parts to this vehicle including three axles which have 6 different modes of attack. In regular mode, it produces a 50/50 split of power to the front and rear solid axles. In another mode you can lock it to distribute 31/42/27.
Overall, there are 6 different locking configurations for different driving situations. The 5.5 Liter twin turbo V8 engine produces 536 hp and 561
lb-ft of torque. Surprisingly, the 6×6 can get a little squirrly and drift like a sports car on the sand of the desert. Top speed is 100mph which is kind of a bummer but driving 100mph in 6 Wheel Drive on a dirt road is not advised.
The vehicle is also equipped with an inflate/deflate system that can air or deflate the tires to what the situation calls for. Sometimes you’ll need to deflate the tires to attack the sand or inflate the tires when driving on the highway. These tires can be centrally inflated or fully deflated with the help of four 20-liter air tanks and a giant compressor. Zero pressure to a roadworthy happens in 20 seconds.
The AMG 6×6 has a factory ground clearance of 18 inches and can drive through 4 feet of water without modifications to it’s factory exhaust system which is 6” higher than the standard G Class.
Unfortunately, the AMG 6×6 isn’t sold in the US but some have made their way across the pond. MSRP is $625,000 and I’ve seen one online for sale in the US for over $975,000.
Last, fitting in a traditional parking spot might be tight for this vehicle but knowing Vader, he’d use the Force to move anyone and anything out of his way.
